Appen is a global leader in the development of human-annotated datasets for machine learning and artificial intelligence. The company was founded in 1996 by linguist Dr. Julie Vonmiller and her husband, Chris Vonmiller, in Sydney, Australia.

In 2011, they expanded into the search relevance evaluation services by acquiring Butler Hill, a US-based company that had Microsoft as a major client. In 2017, Appen acquired Leapforce (and it’s subsidiary Raterlabs), a US-based company founded in 2008 that became the main and biggest vendor of evaluation services for Google.
